The ejaculation abstinence, affects the sperm quality.


During all years that  I was realizing direct activity in Andrology’s laboratory, practically since  that I was a student in San Marcos; claimed very much my attention, to quarrel on the criteria that was using WHO, for to establish a period of ejaculation abstinence as condition to validate a sample of semen. The “WHO laboratory manual for the examination of human semen and sperm-cervical mucus interaction” recommended an abstinence of 3-5 days, extending the range suggesting that the laboratory must not agree samples of semen with abstinence periods less than 2 or more than 7 days. Based on the belief that “more is better” and in that  was not healthy to ejaculate constant, many physicians and laboratories were indicating his patients, periods of ejaculation abstinence that were tacking with the exaggeration and the lack of consideration; even more, if the patient had a previous test in which the parameters had values lower than the awaited average.

 In the practice of assisted Reproduction of low complexity they present many situations in which the gynaecologists need to do two consecutive inseminations, what implies preparing the semen of two ejaculated obtained in the successive days. In my experience these cases were constant and could observe that second seminal sample, without a day of abstinence, were in general of minor volume but with a major concentration of motile sperm. This was observed even in the patients’ semen by sperm diminished parameters.

 In June of this year, David Greening of the ” Sydney IVF ” in Australia, presents the results of a study realized in 118 men with damage in the sperm DNA, observing that the quality of his sperms was improving after asking to ejaculate every day for seven days. The author makes clear that it is probable that on having reduced the time of permanency in the epidídimus, the sperms were less exposed to the free radical, that as has been demonstrated, affect the structure of the membrane and of the sperm chromatin.

 The free radical  or reactivate oxygen species (ROS) are chemically unstable molecules and very oxidizers, that are produced in the alive beings as part of the metabolism, act as pleiotropic mediators of the immunological system; but in excess affect diverse cellular structures by means of reactions of reduction – oxidation. This activity can be modulated by the antioxidant, as the vitamin E and the ascorbic acid, that react chemically with the free radical, inactivating them and preventing the  damage of the cellular structures.

If you are considering some reproductive project, is suitable to consult and to be informed about the antioxidant and not to neglect the ejaculation continuity that turned out to be more important than we were thinking.
